She has a unique set of perceptions of how certain elements of that world work. She describes examples taken from meetings in Switzerland at the World Economic Forum and traces relationships and their network effects on a broader basis. She draws many useful conclusions and provides terrific portraits of some of the major

and macroeconomic events; their relationships; and their rarefied world of power, luxury, and privilege. $uperHubs takes you behind the scenes to their exclusive platforms: the World Economic Forum (WEF); the meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF); and think tank gatherings, power lunches, charity events, and private parties. We learn how the superhubs

was engaged in a flutter of activity, preparing for my most important trip of the year—to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. The exclusivity of the event and its high-profile attendees have shrouded “Davos,” as it has become known, in legend. Set in a small ski resort in the Swiss Alps

most powerful global networks in the world. It is so vast and complex that it is almost difficult to fathom. Soros has attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos for the last two decades and, as a veteran, truly knows how to optimize his time in this surreal place. He is meticulously scheduled

powerful people, and with their credibility they have the authority to convince those powerful people to join their cause. Klaus Schwab, the founder of the World Economic Forum, and George Soros are good examples. When they call, people line up, eager to join the cause whatever it may be. That convening power,

CHAPTER 3 The Links That Connect Superhubs Money, Information, and Opportunities NETWORK NUCLEUS: LARRY FINK Every year during the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Financial Times and CNBC cohost the “Nightcap” at the majestic Belvédère Hotel. The reception is a must-attend for the captains of the various

The WEF is most commonly associated with the Swiss ski resort of Davos, because of its renowned annual gathering, but the institution’s headquarters are located in an exclusive municipality of Geneva

George Soros, who has started many think tanks and charities, knows that the best strategy to achieve access and influence within a network is

CONNECTIVITY Networks need platforms to form, expand, and strengthen. The financial elite follow a yearly migration pattern, flocking to invitation-only conclaves such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, the International Monetary Fund, the Bilderberg Group, the Aspen Institute, the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference, and many more. This tribal super circuit has

of influence. Only superhubs have the “operating manual” on how to gain access and navigate these mechanisms. THE ANNUAL POWER CIRCUIT: DISPATCH FROM DAVOS The World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos is one of the most famous and effective of these platforms. Kicking off the meeting season in January, it unites the leaders of the

at institutions and think tanks, who have generously included me over the last years. In particular, I’d like to thank Klaus Schwab at the World Economic Forum; too many people to thank individually at the IMF, but specifically Christine Lagarde and David Vannier; Paul Volcker, Jacob A. The groundwork for both plans was prepared in part at meetings of the World Economic Forum, and they exemplify how stakeholder capitalism can work if it adheres to the subsidiarity principle. A similar logic applies to matters of technology governance,

additional objectives we should optimize for in the next decade. For countries that wish to go beyond GDP, a number of alternatives already exist.
