Spider-Man’s radioactive spider bites, the gamma radiation exposure that produced the Hulk, or the nuclear physics accident that gave rise to Doctor Manhattan in Watchmen provide ambivalent exceptions to the legions of nuclear-powered villains and monsters that populate the pages of Marvel and DC Comics, or the nuclear hellscapes of video games such as the Fallout franchise.
